On The Lack of Evidence for the Evolution of Psi as an Argument Against the Reality of the Paranormal

چکیده

There seem to be three major lines of argument against the reality of the paranormal (psi): the a priori improbability argument, the lack of evidence argument, and the evolutionary argument. The evolutionary argument states that if the various paranormal powers or faculties were real ways of acquiring information and affecting the outside world, such abilities would have been vastly improved by evolution and would be in widespread use by the biosphere today. The argument proceeds to note that given the very brittle, confusing, and sporadic nature of psychic phenomena that have been reported, as compared to the robust and immediately useful ways that biosystems manipulate other energetic modalities (such as sound, light, etc.), it is improbable that psi represents a real feature of the world. This is a serious argument, and it requires a response. In this paper I discuss several possible replies to such an objection. I take the most likely explanation to be that psi is a feature of the mind, not of the brain. Thus, it is only indirectly affected by biological phenotype, and thus potentially uncoupled from improvement by biophysical evolution. Arguments Against Psi In considering principled arguments (i.e., scientific or philosophical, as opposed to those motivated by emotion, an unwillingness to consider pertinent data, personal gain, etc.) against the reality of paranormal phenomena (psi1), three major lines are evident: the a priori improbability argument, the lack of evidence argument, and the lack of evolution of psi argument. Although none of these argu-

Establishing an Argument-Based Validity Approach for a Low-Stake Test of Collocational Behavior

Most of the validation studies conducted across varying test application contexts are usually framed within the traditional conceptualization of validity and therefore lack a comprehensive framework to focus on test score interpretations and test score use. This study aimed at developing and validating a collocational behavior test (CBT), drawing on Kane's argument-based approach to validity. F...

An analysis of the concept and example of Kowsar and Abtar in the Commentary of Al-Mizan

Despite presenting approximately 26 examples for "Kawthar" in various interpretations, Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Tabatabai has considered the multiplicity of descendants of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) as the exclusive example of this verse. A review of the evidence shows that this view, despite its many positive points, suffers some ambiguities. Therefore, the scientific importance of Al-Mizan interp...

Thinking as Evidence for the Probability of the Existence of a God: An Argument from Unnaturalness for Necessity

The objective of this article is to show that it is justified to assert that the existence of God is plausible, considering the fact that thinking itself is an immediate outcome (effect) of a thinker (cause). This idea may seem evident, but it is in fact challenged by certain claims of cognitive philosophers who aver that our knowledge of necessity and causation is, i...

What is the Purpose of Psi?

According to the prevailing view in biology, the driving force for biological evolution is self-serving enhancement of reproductive and associated material success through competition and struggle for existence. However, the evolution of consciousness in humans has resulted in symbolic thought and culture that can disengage from the instinctive self-interests underlying evolution. This evolutio...

Social Anomia against the Backdrop of Misinformation/ Disinformation: A Cognitive Approach to the Multivalent Data in Cyberspace

The present study is an attempt to problematize the multivalent data in the cyberspace through the lenses of Wittgenstein’s analytic philosophy of language. Adopting this linguistic philosophy approach is aimed at exploring the dichotomous question of whether cyberspace is a possibility for social power or it is a contributory cause of communicative discontinuity and henceforth a possibility fo...
